Hamas Says US Veto On UN Draft Resolution On Jewish Settlement "Arbitrary"

GAZA, Feb 19 (Bernama)-- The Islamic Hamas movement said Saturday the US veto on a UN resolution condemning Jewish settlement was "arbitrary," China's Xinhua news agency reported.

"The veto reveals the reality of the clear US support to what the Zionist enemy does against our people," Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said.

The United States on Friday vetoed a UN draft resolution that condemned continued Israeli settlement activities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem and demanded Israel "immediately and completely cease" all such activities in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Barhoum added that Washington obstructs an international consensus on the illegitimacy of the settlement activities in the occupied territories.

For Hamas, the United States has never been a sponsor of peace talks between Israel and the West Bank-based Palestinian National Authority, according to Barhoum.

The US-brokered negotiations were halted in September, when Israel resumed building settlements in the West Bank after a 10- month moratorium.

Barhoum, whose movement controls the Gaza Strip, called on the PNA to cease all kinds of negotiations and liaison with Israel. "Let's start a new phase to empower the internal Palestinian unity."
