LOCAL NEWS: All National Service Camps To Go For ISO Certification By Next Year

SIBU, Feb 20 (Bernama) -- The National Service Training Department (JLKN) plans to have all its 80 training camps nationwide obtain the ISO 9001 2008 certification by next year, JLKN Director-General Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil said Sunday.

Efforts would be made to have 30 of the camps certified by this year and the rest by next year, he told reporters after a visit to the Junaco Park Camp at Ulu Oya Road, here.

"The certification is very important to ensure that all the rules and regulations or the SOP (standard operating procedure) are observed by the camp management.

"Every camp must fulfil 44 criteria, ranging from management aspects to training, infrastructure and others," he said.

Two camps, "Setia Ikhlas" in Ulu Semenyih and "Princess Haliza" in Sepang, Selangor, obtained their certification in September last year.

On another matter, Abdul Hadi said national service trainees would be given special assistance if they wish to pursue their studies at the National Defence University of Malaysia.

"Our Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has instructed that teams from the army headquarters visit the camps. Trainees will be asked to fill in the application forms based on their SPM trial exam results," he said.

After the SPM exam results are announced in April, group interviews would be held at selected camps, he said.

"Of course, for them to be recruited, they must meet the basic entry requirements. The Defence Ministry will not compromise on this," he said.

Abdul Hadi said studies had shown that the trainees, having the advantage of the leadership, spiritual, moral and physical development training at the camps, would excel in their tertiary education.

He also said that from this year, the ministry would provide a special allocation for the camps in Sarawak to hold more community services.
