Pakatan To Decide On Party To Contest Kerdau Seat - Anwar

GEORGE TOWN, Feb 19 (Bernama) -- The Pakatan Rakyat Leadership Council is to meet soon to decide on the party to represent the opposition pact in the Kerdau state by-election in Pahang, Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.

He said PAS had contested the seat in the general election in 2008.

"The Pakatan Rakyat council decided on a PAS candidate for the Merlimau state by-election in Melaka. We will decide on the candidate for Kerdau," he told reporters after a meeting with leaders of Penang Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), here. Anwar is PKR advisor.

The Kerdau and Merlimau by-elections will be held simultaneously, with nomination set for Feb 26 and polling for March 6.

The Kerdau seat fell vacant following the death of the assemblyman, Datuk Zaharuddin Abu Kassim, 63, of BN, on Feb 12. In the general election in 2008, Zaharuddin beat Hassanuddin Salim of PAS by a majority of 1,615 votes.

The Merlimau seat fell vacant after the assemblyman, Datuk Mohamad Hidhir Abu Hassan, 54, of BN, died on Jan 20. In 2008, Mohamad Hidhir beat Jasme Tompang of PAS by a majority of 2,154 votes.
