Spain says it will lower highway speed limits and train ticket prices as part of an emergency energy savings initiative in response to the crisis in Libya.
Spanish Deputy Prime Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said Friday the proposals are designed to reduce consumption in light of rising oil prices related to the social unrest in Libya.
The proposal would drop the speed limit from the current 120 kilometers per hour to 110. It would also call for a reduction in fares for short- and medium-distance trips, as well as commuter train service.
Oil companies will also be required to add more renewable bio-fuel to gasoline and diesel produced.
The temporary measures are expected to take effect March 7.
