Vote Counting Underway in Ugandan Elections

Ballot counting is underway in Uganda's presidential and parliamentary elections after Friday's peaceful voting.
Incumbent President Yoweri Museveni is poised to win a fourth term.
A new term would extend Mr. Museveni's rule in Uganda to three decades. But the president is facing perhaps his toughest competition in 25 years, as his former physician Kizza Besigye challenges him for the third straight time.
Mr. Besigye, who is leading a four-party opposition coalition, has accused the government of trying to rig the vote. President Museveni denies the charge.
Mr. Besigye plans to release his own vote tally and has threatened to call for street protests if his results do not match the election commission's numbers. He has warned that Uganda is ready for an Egyptian-style revolt.
Mr. Museveni is predicting a landslide victory.
About 14 million Ugandans are registered to vote in the presidential and parliamentary elections. These were the fourth elections in Uganda since the return of multi-party polls in 1996.
