local : Najib Will Do Right Thing In Row Over Bibles, Says SUPP Chief

KUCHING, March 15 (Bernama) -- Sarawak United People's Party president Tan Sri Dr George Chan is confident that Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will "do the right thing" to solve the row over 30,000 copies of the Bible in Malay being impounded at the port here.

Dr Chan, who is Deputy Chief Minister, said the state government as such had no immediate plans to mediate on behalf of the Christian community over the books being held by the Home Ministry.

"I am sure the Prime Minister and his deputy (Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin) will do the right thing. I have no doubt they will do the right thing as soon as possible," he said at a media conference on the Sarawak Hornbill Tourism Award 2009-2010 presentation to be held in October.

Dr Chan said that he could not understand why copies of the Bible in Malay had been impounded.

The Bible in Malay was available in Sarawak, he said, adding: "We have never encountered any problem (about using the Bible in Malay) here."
