Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has vowed to crack down on those guilty of corruption during the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi.
Mr. Singh said Thursday that even before the games began last October, there were complaints of wrongdoing. The Indian leader told parliament the government will investigate the matter and those found guilty will “not be spared.”
His comments come one day after India's Central Bureau of Investigation arrested two top organizers of the Commonwealth Games for alleged graft.
The event was marred by cost overruns, corruption allegations and construction delays.
The ruling Congress Party's parliamentary secretary and head of the Commonwealth Games, Suresh Kalmadi, was fired following the corruption scandal.
Kalmadi has denied any wrongdoing. On Thursday, he said the government probe was targeting the wrong people and should instead focus on the country's sports ministry.
