Belarus Authorities Determine Suspects in Subway Bombing

Authorities in Belarus say they have detained several suspects in Monday's subway station bombing in Minsk that killed 12 people.

The bomb exploded in a crowded subway station in the Belarusian capital of Minsk during Monday afternoon rush hour, killing 12 people and wounding at least 149 others.

Belarus' domestic security agency, the KGB, said it has identified a likely perpetrator for the bombing and listed him as “wanted.”

President Alexander Lukashenko visited the blast site Monday, then hurried to an emergency Cabinet meeting. He said he suspects outside forces looking to undermine peace and security are behind the blast.

The president said the explosion may be linked to a deadly 2008 rock concert bombing.

Deputy prosecutor general Andrei Shved has already declared the subway explosion an act of terrorism.

The Monday rush hour blast hit an underground subway station in central Minsk, about 100 meters from the presidential palace.

Tension has grown in Belarus in recent months because of economic problems and the disputed December presidential election, which Mr. Lukashenko won by a landslide.

The opposition and international observers called the vote fraudulent, leading to violent protests and the arrests of hundreds, including seven opposition presidential candidates.
