General Strike to Protest Austerity Measures in Greece

Unions in Greece have called for a general strike Wednesday that is set to cripple the nation's public transportation and other services.
Workers will suspend bus, rail and metro travel all day. A work-stoppage at Greek airports will ground planes there for four hours, likely causing several delays and cancellations.
Many businesses across the country will close their shops Wednesday.
Unions and professional groups are angry at painful austerity measures that the Socialist government is implementing in exchange for a $150-billion bailout loan package from European countries and the International Monetary Fund.
Greeks added to their protests with an “I Won't Pay” movement, blocking tolls and ticket booths so people cannot pay for government transportation. The movement is angry about increased taxes paired with higher public transportation fees.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel is hosting Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou Tuesday to discuss Greece's economic crisis. On Monday, Mr. Papandreou urged Germany to be more open to lowering interest rates on bailout aid.
