tech : Rumors of iPad delay drags down shares of Apple's Taiwan suppliers

Taipei, Feb. 23 (CNA) Shares of Taiwanese companies that supply products for Apple Inc. ended down Wednesday after the U.S. company reportedly decided to put off the release of its new iPad 2 tablet computer for a design change.

Apple's assembly partner Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. saw its share price fall 1.35 percent to NT$110 (US$3.72).

Catcher Technology Co., which makes iPad casings, suffered a much bigger drop of 5.67 percent to close at NT$116.5.

According to market rumors earlier in the day, Apple has delayed the release of its iPad 2 from April to June. But some of the Taiwanese companies in Apple's supply chain said Wednesday that they were not aware of such a decision.

Genius Electronic Optical Co., a lens maker, posted a heavy loss of 5.48 percent to close at NT$293.5, while touch panel maker Wintek Corp. fell 4.42 percent to NT$51.9.

Largan Precision Co., a leading handset camera lens maker, finished 3.21 percent lower at NT$755.

Battery maker Simplo Technology Co. closed down 3.93 percent at NT$183.5, while TPK Holding Co., Apple's touch-screen supplier, shed 1.76% percent to finish at NT$727.

However, DynaPack International Technology Corp., a battery manufacturer, rose 0.11 percent to NT$92.1. (By Han Ting-ting and Alex Jiang) ENDITEM /pc
