Bosnians Protest Arrest of Ex-Bosnian General in Austria

Hundreds of people marched through the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Sarajevo, Saturday to protest the arrest of a former Bosnian army general in Austria on an international warrant for alleged war crimes.

The demonstrators gathered outside the Austrian embassy and demanded the release of 74-year old Jovan Divjak arrested at the Vienna airport Thursday night.

The warrant was issued by Interpol at the request of Serbia.

Serbian authorities are seeking General Divjak's extradition in connection with the 1992 attack on a Yugoslav army convoy that was withdrawing from Sarajevo during the Bosnian Serb siege of the city. Many soldiers, most of them from Serbia, were killed during the attack, but the numbers have been disputed.

The retired general is a born-Serb who defected to Bosnia's Muslim-dominated army at the start of the conflict. He retired from military service in 1997 and became active in promoting education, with special assistance to children who lost their parents in the war.
