Israeli Air Strike Kills 2 Palestinians in Gaza

Medics in the Gaza Strip say Israeli aircraft killed two Palestinians Sunday, following a week of escalating cross-border violence.

The Israeli military did not immediately confirm the report.

Palestinian militants, including Gaza's Hamas rulers, said Saturday that they will cease fire if Israel does.

But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had said Friday that his government was prepared to act with “great force” to halt rocket attacks from Gaza.

Israel also announced Friday that it would deploy an expensive rocket defense system to the region. The government said the Iron Dome interceptor system is capable of shooting down rockets fired from a range of five to 70 kilometers.

Tensions between the two sides heightened over the past week. Militants have fired dozens of rockets and mortar shells into Israel while Israeli forces have responded with air strikes.
