PUTRAJAYA: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has asked Malaysians not to simply take text messages claiming that radiation from the exploded Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant will hit Asian countries, including Malaysia, as true.
The Deputy Prime Minister said there was no reason for Malaysians to be overly worried about the radiation threat given the distance of our country from Japan.
“The relevant agencies are constantly monitoring not just the situation in Japan but everything, including the weather.
“Information will be issued and disseminated by the authorised authorities and so far, Malaysia is safe,” he told newsmen after closing the Education Ministry’s 1Malaysia adopted children programme here yesterday.
Muhyiddin also appealed to everyone not to create unnecessary fear among the people to the extent that they were afraid to go to work.
“I don’t think we need to be worried because if danger lurks, the authorities will inform the people,” he said.

The text message also urged people in Asian countries to take the necessary precautions, such as staying indoors, especially when it rained.
On whether the Government will review the proposal to build a nuclear plant, Muhyiddin said there were lessons to be learned from the incident.
“National safety will surely be considered. We have agencies that are responsible for the matter.
“They know what they are doing and we are confident that they will do their best,” he said.
