Afghanistan Releases Christian Convert from Jail

Afghan officials say they have released a local man who had been jailed nine months for converting from Islam to Christianity.

The Kabul detention center director said Friday Sayed Mussa was freed earlier this week after prosecutors determined there was insufficient evidence to go forward with the case.

It is unclear where Mussa is now.

Authorities arrested the 46-year-old father of six last May after an Afghan television station broadcast images of alleged Christian baptisms in Kabul. The broadcast raised fears that the influx of foreigners since the U.S.-led invasion in 2001 increased proselytizing in the Islamic state.

At least one other Afghan Christian convert, Shoaib Assadullah, remains in custody. Authorities arrested Assadullah late last year after he allegedly gave a copy of the Christian Bible to a friend.
