Thai Red Shirts Mark a Year Since Deadly Crackdown

Tens of thousands of anti-government “Red Shirts” gathered in the Thai capital of Bangkok Sunday to mark the one-year anniversary of deadly clashes between troops and protesters during a mass rally in the city.

Violent confrontations between the military and protesters on April 10 of last year left 26 people dead and hundreds injured.

Protest organizers say former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a military coup and convicted of corruption, will address the rally from overseas in the evening. Mr. Thaksin is living in exile to avoid a prison sentence.

The Red Shirts view Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's government as illegitimate because he was appointed in a 2008 parliamentary vote after a court ruling threw out the previous administration.
